A little about me

I was born in London to Spanish and Italian parents, from an early age I became interested in the classical guitar and began learning to play different styles eventually finding my way to Flamenco. After spending some time in Barcelona in 1990 learning with the guitarist Manuel Granados I became interested in the construction of the classical guitar. On my return to the UK I began learning how to build guitars firstly with Greg Chapman and then soon afterwards with master Luthier Stephen Hill with whom I made my first guitars.

From then on I started emersing myself in learning this art form and in 1996 I began a BSc in Musical Instrument technology at the London Guildhall University where I learnt from another fine luthier David Whiteman. I completed my degree in 1999 and was awarded a First class Honours. That same year I was awarded a scholarship by the British Academy of Arts to study a masters in Ethnomusicology at the prestigious School of Oriental and African Studies at London University which I completed in 2000.

I then set up my first workshop in Brighton UK and began repairing and making guitars and other plucked stringed instruments and eventually opened up my shop and workshop known as Aguilera Guitars in central Brighton which remained open until I emigrated to Argentina with my family in 2012.

Since living in Cordoba, Argentina I built my own workshop and started making and teaching the art of luthery, to local and foreign students. In 2018 I was awarded a grant to give an introductory course in instrument making by the Fondo Nacional de las Artes and in 2019 I won first prize in the 5th International Instrument making Competition of the Escuela de Lutheria de Tucuman in the guitar category making a guitar based on a small guitar by Antonio de Torres, the jury included international musicians Juan Falu, Carlos Moscardini and Pablo Gonzalez.

I now give residential intensive courses in my workshop to students from all around the world.
